How to Measure the Door Opening for Custom Doors

When customizing doors, accurately measuring the door opening is crucial to ensure the door fits perfectly. The process of measuring the door opening typically includes several steps. Precise measurements are necessary to ensure the door fits well and looks aesthetically pleasing. Here’s how you can measure the door opening:

1. Measure the Door Opening Width

  • Measurement Locations: Measure the width of the door opening at the top, middle, and bottom of the opening, and record the measurements for these three positions. The door opening may be slightly tilted or irregular, so take the smallest width as the standard width for the custom door.
  • Important Notes: If the door opening is irregular, consider customizing a door with an asymmetric shape. Ensure you leave an appropriate gap (typically 3mm-5mm) to allow the door to open and close smoothly.

2. Measure the Door Opening Height

  • Measurement Locations: Measure the height of the door opening at the left side, center, and right side, and record the maximum and minimum height differences. Typically, the smallest height is used as the standard height for the custom door.
  • Important Notes: If there are irregularities in the door opening, it’s best to adjust the door design to accommodate these differences. Make sure to leave a gap at the bottom (typically 10mm-15mm) to ensure the door fits well with the floor.

3. Measure the Door Opening Depth (Door Frame Depth)

  • Measurement Location: Measure the depth of the door frame, which refers to the distance from the edge of the frame to the wall. This measurement is important to ensure the door frame fits properly during installation.
  • Important Notes: The depth of the door frame can vary depending on the type of door, especially for custom doors. Pay attention to the fit between the door frame and the wall to ensure adequate space for installation.

4. Measure the Verticality of the Door Opening

  • Measurement Location: Use a level or laser measuring tool to check the verticality of both sides of the door opening. The verticality of the door opening affects the symmetry and stability of the door.
  • Important Notes: If the door opening is not vertical, you may need to make slight adjustments to the frame or customize a non-standard frame to suit the actual conditions of the opening.

5. Measure the Horizontal Alignment of the Door Opening

  • Measurement Location: Similarly, use a level to measure the horizontal alignment at the top and bottom of the door opening. If the top and bottom are uneven, you may need to adjust the door design or choose an adjustable frame system to compensate for the unevenness.
  • Important Notes: If the opening is uneven, the door design should be adjusted accordingly to fit perfectly.

6. Door Swing Direction

  • Measurement Location: When measuring the door opening, it's also important to determine the swing direction of the door (left-hand or right-hand). This will affect the placement of hinges and the design of the door.
  • Important Notes: Based on the swing direction of the door, you need to consider the placement of handles and locks to ensure the door functions properly and is easy to operate.

7. Additional Considerations

  • Door Opening Surface: If the surface of the door opening is uneven or has protruding parts, you may need to treat the walls or make adjustments to the door design.
  • Installation Gaps: Make sure to leave an appropriate installation gap around the door frame, typically 2mm-5mm, to ensure smooth installation and avoid distortion.
